Discover America tour dates & tracks for new album

Anyone who knows anything knows that I've always been a huge Chris Staples fan. Okay, really a Twothirtyeight fan. He was from Florida, I was from Florida and I'm pretty sure my friend Robbie or maybe my friend Jason first pressed the Twothirtyeight disc in my hand, back in the Takehold Records / college days.

To me, Staples and Twothirtyeight was a study in minimalism--their first album had this punky beat with the off-signature non-pop emo seeping in, and then it just delved further and further into stripped down versions of itself--and pretty soon Staples stood alone.

His moniker for the last 7 years or so has been Discover America; a project I haven't been as much into...but I'm looking forward to this new album after that same friend Robbie dropped me a 7" in the mail. My resistance probably has nothing to do with the music itself, just that well, Chris Staples has and always will be about two steps ahead in my music development.



So the new one is called Future Paths from Lujo Records out April 27th. Lujo has quite a lineup filled with familiar faces from the past--including The Dark Romantics and Cool Hand Luke.

In addition, there's a big whizz-bang tour Discover America tour to go along with the album.

Swing South: Mount Righteous

Mount Righteous: "Sing to Me, Tiffany"

Got a penchant for big, bombastic bands. I like some Anathallo, Sufjan, Architecture in Helsinki, etc.

Grapevine, TX's Mount Righteous is of those ilks, except not as electrically plugged in and a little gaudier with their cheese and optimism. Really reminded me of early Anathallo, but now they've gone mostly mopey whereas Mount Righteous keeps the big bass drum, tuba and trumpet rocking all the time.

Swing South: Brand New

Brand New: "Sink"

Wasn't going to let this one slip by. One of my favorite bands, one of my top albums of the decade. If you're still unfamiliar with Brand New, strip away whatever prejudices you have about Alt Press cover bands, scenesters and even punk rock in general. After their first album, all generalities have morphed into persistent questioning. Punk rock made into solid rock. Their devolution is an evolution. Though Daisy is alright, it is a letdown after The Devil and God, but I think the best is still to come.

Oh yeah, Thrice is on this tour too. The were (are?) one of my fav. bands, though all their new stuff has left me less than enthused.

Swing South: Pinback

Pinback: "From Nothing to Nowhere"

What a treat when this band emerges from their San Diego enclave. Though they're from the lower CA, I always think of them as a northwest band, in the realm of Death Cab For Cutie and Menomena. I like to think of Pinback as sterile pop, their off-time jauntiness and their electronic fringes has this "clean" feel to it. With their various solo projects, seeing this band live and together makes it even more excellent. Think I saw some murmurings of a 2010 album emerging, so let's keep our fingers crossed.
