Swing South: American Aquarium cd release and dates

Takes something special for me to post on the weekend. Weekends are for rest and not remembering anything.

But that something special is the release of American Aquarium's new album,
Small Town Hymns on Last Chance Records.

CD release party is tonight at The Pour House in Raleigh.

Maybe alt-country, maybe bar rock, maybe your new favorite band. Usually I don't get into stuff like this, but their live set totally wins me over every time.

If you're wondering what Lucero was like before they were LUCERO, then listen to American Aquarium.

All southeast dates after the jump (and there are a bunch of them....)

Portland's The Thermals are launching their east coast tour today, right smack in Orlando. Past Lives are joining them, whose stuff I've enjoyed recently.

Maybe The Thermals will throw in their new tune, "Separate" into the set list. Listen to it on their MySpace.

That track is featured on a split with The Cribs to be released on Record Store Day, April 20.

The new album is supposed to appear this fall--a project they're working on with Chris Walla.

Friday Five: Sleep Bellum Sonno & the Five Best Ways to Say 'Cool'

Sleep Bellum Sonno: "House of Spades"

New Jersey's Sleep Bellum Sonno are on tour with Rapid Cities promoting their latest release,
Judge Us By How We Lived Our Lives Not By How We Made Our Living. Here are the five best things they've heard recently (with southern tour dates following...):

None of us are good at impressions.

Really. I promise! It is in your best interest to never ask us to attempt to mimic an accent. But as terrible as we are, for some reason we all have the bad habit of trying. For the most part it's intentional, we close the van doors and try our hardest to sound like we belong in that city. We add some drawl or over-exaggerate our vowels, but no matter how hard we try we never quite get it right. I guess, in a way, being bad at it is part of what makes it great.

And it is… Until we realize that we can't stop. We'll stop to get gas and forget to drop character. We'll pull over to eat and forget to turn off our lisps before ordering. And in the end we come home with a whole new vernacular.

5 ways to say "Cool"...

WICKED!

WILBRAHAM, MA

It's a cliche, I know. And as often as it gets pointed out you would think people would be overly conscious of using it, but just as we can't deny being New Yawka's, our friends in Black Churches certainly aren't hiding the fact that they live a stones throw from Bawston either.
http://www.myspace.com/blackchurches

BADASS!
KANSAS / KC, MO

When we toured out to the border of Kansas and Missouri this winter it was officially the furthest we had traveled as a band. We didn't know what to expect, but one of the greatest things about music is its ability to create instant friendships, like we did with Texas Instruments and Grizzly J. Berry. Our late night guided tours and drunken views from the roofs of 200 year old hotels were nothing short of, well, Badass.
http://www.myspace.com/texasinstrumentstheband
http://www.myspace.com/grizzlyjberry

AMAZING! (or A-maaaaaazing)
ONEONTA, NY

A while back some of our best friends, who helped us start this band, moved a few hours upstate for school. We joked that their wouldn't be anything for them to do, which i realize now is unfair. There wasn't less to do, just less places to do it. So when they met some buddies and started spending all of their time knocking out some hits, it was only a matter of time before their personalities and mannerisms started rubbing off on each other. The exaggerated hand gestures that accompany this one are almost as fun to watch as TIMESHARES are live.
http://www.myspace.com/timesharesmusic

TIGHT! (or ToyT)
ROCKFORD, IL

We have been to Rockford, Illinois a few times now. If there were only one other place in this country that we always feel at home, I might say its Rockford. But as well as we have gotten to know Warren Franklin and the guys in Joie De Vivre I still can't get used to this. Its not really the word itself that gets my attention, or even the pronunciation, it's the quantity! Its nonstop. Which, i guess, in their defense, is understandable: The land of Cheap Trick has a lot of good things going for it right now, and these guys are responsible for a lot of it.
http://www.myspace.com/warrenfranklin
http://www.myspace.com/joiedevivreband

UNREAL (or unREEEEEAL)
LONG ISLAND, NY

If there is any one group of people to blame for our slang, it's Sainthood Reps. A few close friends of ours have put together a new superpower on Long Island. You may not have heard their songs yet, but you can't spend an hour in our town without hearing someone use one of their expressions. I don't know how most of them start, but when they do they catch on and spread quickly; as their music will soon. I'm confident of that.
http://www.myspace.com/sainthoodreps

What's everybody's favorite slang word right now?

Swing South: Dear Landlord / Off With Their Heads

Dear Landlord: "I Live In Hell"
Dear Landlord: "Heartbroken Handshakes"

Need to order this album, because according to respected sources, it is the greatest since sliced bread. Late 90s punk reinvented and reinvigorated. Dear Landlord is from Illinois but on Gainesville's No Idea Records. They end their trip at the Harvest of Hope Fest in St. Augustine, FL which I need to do a bigger write-up on.

Also on the tour is Off With Their Heads from Minnesota. Deeper and darker.

Swing South: Flashbulb Fires

Flashbulb Fires: "Ambulance"

I'm not usually a fan of sprawling pop, but Denver's Flashbulb Fires takes pensive melodies and extends them to their farthest ends but with a dash of Americana as if Coldplay got serious about analyzing Jeff Tweedy. Their new album
Glory is out now. The whole thing is worth it just for the opener "Pyramid Schemes." The Southeast dates are below, including a stop in Nashville for the 7th Anniversary of Rocketown...

Swing South: Surfer Blood/Holiday Shores/Turbo Fruits

Surfer Blood: "Swim"
Holiday Shores: "Phones Don't Feud"
Turbo Fruits: "Know Too Much"

Stepping into the hype machine is Surfer Blood. Perhaps the best thing of their HIT "Swim" is that instead of careening off on its own experimental fuzzed-off axis, it keeps the guitar melody sharp, allowing the vox to instead be all analog-sounding fuzz. There's of course, a lot of this going on--anywhere from Japandroids to Black Lips to Times New Viking, but for a penchant of fun they throw in that "afro-pop" vibe in a few places, allowing them to capitalize on the convergence of multiple trends at once. Just like any good band-of-the-moment.

Dang, there's even a "Twin Peaks" song.

I'm not saying Surfer Blood will fade, I hope the West Palm kids have got in them for the long haul. And Tallahassee's Holiday Shores aren't so shabby either, emphasizing more of the loosey-goosey rhythmic parts though....different boats for different coasts.

And oh, snap! Nashville's Turbo Fruits may blow both of them out of the water. All in all, this would be a fun show to attend, very buzz worthy, alt-cred will skyrocket.

Southern tour dates below....

Swing South: Generationals

It's Mardi Gras time and the Generationals are on tour bringing the NOLA love across the south. If you haven't heard of this band, you haven't been reading--Generationals' 2009 release Con Law was one of our faves from 2009.

Swing South: Lucero/Glossary

You know about Lucero. You know about 1372 Overton Park. That it's a homage to Memphis. That there are horns on it. You know the song above is not new, but it's a classic.

Glossary: "The Natural State"
Glossary: "Pretty Things"

But now you should know Glossary. That they are fellow Tennesseans but from further down the road (a ways east) in Murfreesboro . They have a bit softer alt-country sound than Lucero, perhaps poppier, but all their stuff is great. Their new album is Feral Fire. It came out 2 wks ago. Find it. Tour dates for Lucero and Glossary after the jump...

Swing South: Cold Cave/Nite Jewel

(Ed. note: Cold Cave cancelled their show in Chapel Hill the other night & is canceling their show in Tampa & in Atlanta & I would assume Orlando..I'm not sure about the other southern dates...I think Nite Jewel is still playing...but this letter still stands...)

Mr. Eisold of Cold Cave,

I know that you sued Fall Out Boy, played in a cool hardcore band on Bridge Nine and even started a literary press. Considering what we cover on this site, you should be my hero. But I can't stand Cold Cave, I don't get it, I don't like it. I do listen to some "electronic" music, but this is too much of a new wave-ish ripoff for me.

I guess you knew you would "lose" your old fans, good thing you got Pitchfork & Stereogum to lead you to more.

Anyway, people seem to like your new release, Love Comes Close. I'm just not one of them.

I don't blame you, I don't think you're "selling out" or anything like that. You're doing what you want to do, I hope. Best wishes, I guess we part from here. I might pick up some of your Heartworm zines, though.

Sincerely,
Your pals at Deckfight

P.S. Actually I like Nite Jewel better. This video is supposed to be funny, right?....right?

Swing South: Mount Righteous

Mount Righteous: "Sing to Me, Tiffany"

Got a penchant for big, bombastic bands. I like some Anathallo, Sufjan, Architecture in Helsinki, etc.

Grapevine, TX's Mount Righteous is of those ilks, except not as electrically plugged in and a little gaudier with their cheese and optimism. Really reminded me of early Anathallo, but now they've gone mostly mopey whereas Mount Righteous keeps the big bass drum, tuba and trumpet rocking all the time.

Good interview w/ Splice Mag.

And go see them because all their merch got stolen yesterday, according to their website. Southern dates below.

Swing South: American Aquarium

American Aquarium: "City Lights"

Just really getting into Raleigh's American Aquarium. Got some Lucero stuff going on, for sure, but American Aquarium is a bit breezier, a tad poppier without sucking at it. Don't mind the organ either, really. Also, BJ Barham might be the coolest name in the history of cool alt-country names.

They seem to be on tour all the time and this time looks just as intense. Going to the Show in Wilmington with Annuals and Lonnie Walker. What a blast.

Dances For The Lonely is their album. Try and get it. Tour dates through Feb. after the jump...

Swing South: Paper Operator

Paper The Operator: "The Pendulum"

Oh man. Sometimes I get random stuff. Sometimes I open it, sometimes I don't. But oh man, I'm glad I opened Paper The Operator.

Stream their new album,
Goodbye God, here.

Paper The Operator has all the vox up front, with a little spacey-melody backing up the singer/songwriter anxieties (listen to "Left Lucy") and then hopeful grunge turned quick shoegaze (listen to "Rock Dreams). Very simple, but excellent. I want to say the Paper The Operator is like The Rocket Summer for some reason, but I have no compunction to make fun of Paper The Operator.

Again, stream the new one here. Definitely will have to work a review.

Still a few GA/Carolina dates left, after the jump...
